Alexander Kennedy’s relatively short biography of Mozart is filled with all the significant information one would want to know about this master composer of more than six hundred musical works in his short lifetime. He died at age 35. He began to dedicate his life to music at age three when he wrote his first composition. He embarked on a European tour for the first time with his father at age six to make money, and was granted a court appointment at thirteen. He figured out how music could pluck at a person’s heartstrings. Among his many masterpieces is “The Marriage of Figaro,” “The Magic Flute,” and the simple music for “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”“The way he worked, the way he thought was so unique and groundbreaking that it changed music forever. He and his contemporary, Joseph Haydn, were directly responsible for literally creating an entirely new genre of music: Classical.” Haydn taught Mozart that simplicity in music is sometimes more impressive than complexity. Mozart died before Haydn who praised Mozart as being a better artist than he.
Mozart was precocious, studious, hardworking and playful. He did not grow enough hair until age twenty-two to need to shave. Unfortunately, despite his great skills, when he was eight, he spoke without thinking and was incapable of dressing himself. Once, for example, as a youngster, while playing before a queen, he asked if he could kiss her, and was rebuffed. Yet, usually his early shocking behavior was excused because of his skills.
He began life as a celebrated prodigy, but most of his life was later filled with disappointments, jealousy, claims that he was a fake, that he copied works by others or made small changes in another’s work. Rumors circulated that when his wife Constanze gave birth to a son in 1791, the year he died, the child’s father was not Mozart. He was even unable for a long while to get a job as a court musician and once, when he secured such a job, he was soon fired from it. Yet before he died, unlike most artists who are not renowned while alive, he was acclaimed as a great musician.
He joined the Freemasons, a mystic society, and much of his music reflects his connection to masonic themes and mysticism. He was not good at saving money and died in debt.
Twenty-first century doctors are convinced that Mozart died from a complication of strep throat that led to kidney failure. No one knows where Mozart is buried.
Kennedy shows that despite his obvious genius, if he “had been born in a different town or at a different time, his life may have been dramatically – and disastrously – different.” This observation should prompt us to take this into consideration when we evaluate other great people.

This is a short biography of the great Classical composer, Wolfgang Mozart. Yet despite its length, this book is chock-full of interesting information about the great composer as both a musician and as a person. In less than 150 pages the author manages to shed light on Mozart's important works AND on his fascinating personality. Musicians will enjoy this book, and even non-musicians will find Mozart's life story a fascinating one.
This is a very unprofessionally written book. It's full of grammatical and spelling errors. I recommend purchasing a more in-depth and more professional biography.

The author has provided a highly detailed listing of this celebrated musician’s life activities. Included are his amazing accomplishments beginning as a child of three and extending to his early death at thirty-five years of age. It details his virtuosic abilities with several instruments, his incomparable ability to sight-read any musical score set before him, his establishment of unique musical themes admired by and influential in the lives of subsequent musical greats and his production of six hundred musical compositions ranging from religious to comedic that still are as lovingly enjoyed throughout much of the world today as they were in his highly acclaimed but tragically short life. A most interesting read.
"Mozart A Life of Genius" by Alexander Kennedy is an informative story told in about 100 pages. The book details the practical and creative genius of Mozart. Mozart and Joseph Haydn are both credited with popularizing the classical music genre.
By age 35, Mozart created approximately 600 pieces of music from operas to quartets. Luckily, the Archbishop of Saltzburg supported the arts. And so, Mozart and his family received the financial monies to continue in their music adventure.
As a child prodigy and into early manhood, Mozart toured Vienna, Munich, Bavaria, Paris, London and other famous places. King Louis XV asked Mozart to play the organ in the royal chapel. The Marriage of Figaro was one of Mozart's most famous pieces about two young lovers who deceived their master in order to marry. This piece is performed "presto" which is faster than "allegro". The piece proceeds in a light "piano" and progresses to heavier notes performed in "forte".
Overall, "Mozart A Life of Genius" by Alexander Kennedy documents the life and times of one of music history's most famous composers. The work is informative and proceeds at a fast pace.
Many things are said about Mozart. Some people say he was a genius while others say he lived an eccentric life. The way I see it he was a great man. Regardless of the man’s life, his music has and will endure throughout the centuries.

This interesting biography charts the musician's extraordinary career and personal life while painting a vibrant cultural history of eighteenth-century Europe. It’s a nice compact read of a hundred pages that’s well written and very informative.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the man Mozart as well as his music. It gives a realistic insight into the way he processed things and constructed his music. More important though is that it tells us more about the events and feelings of his life while bringing a deeper insight into his works.
Definitely a good read for those who love classical music and history lovers that care for more than just the events but the people too. Five stars from me. I received a copy for a fair and unbiased review.
